Papier Mache is one of the most popular crafts practiced in Kashmir today. 

The word papier mace has been derived from the French word that means the molding pulp. But in Kashmir its “KARI QALAMDANE” knew it. Qalamdane means a pen case. Initially this art was restricted to the preparation of pen case only. The craft was also known as Kar-I-munaqqash, since it was used for ornamenting smooth surfaces made of pulp or layers of polished paper.
